The "Discover Haiti Exhibition" is currently running at the Little Haiti Cultural Center and will be ongoing for the next 2 months.
What is the "Discover Haiti Exhibition"?
It all started with Donna Karen appropriately flashing a handbag of hers that is as unique as the well-known designer herself. What makes it special is the material it is made of, paper-mache; the handbag represents Haiti's handmade carnival masks. The Little Haiti Cultural Center exhibition is full of art, accessories, and furnishings especially crafted by Haitian artisans. These creations are then sold by Karen's Urban Zen Foundation. Karen started this foundation after the death of her husband in 2001. She then focused the exhibition on Haitian culture after the earthquake a few years later.
"She understands what we as a people, what we as a government, want to do with our art: show the world the riches of Haiti and commercialize it," said Haiti's consul general in Miami, Francois Guillaume. "But, we don't want to lose our identity. We don't want to lose whatever it is that makes Donna Karan like Haiti that much."
